Schedule of Activities

This year will feature a special kick-off event on the evening before the Fair. On Friday, November 9th at 6:00 p.m. the Book Fair will host a one-woman performance of Lee Smith’s “On Agate Hill” by Barbara Bates Smith (accompanied by musician Jeff Sebens). The performance will be held in the Asbury Room of the Sylva First United Methodist Church. A tax-deductible $25 ticket pays for entrance to the performance and heavy hors d’oeuvres beginning at 6:00 p.m., with a curtain call at 7:00 p.m. All proceeds from ticket sales go to the Library Building Fund.

“On Agate Hill” is adapted from the Lee Smith novel of the same title. Barbara Bates Smith, noted for her adaptation and Off-Broadway performance of “Ivy Row” from Lee Smith’s Fair and Tender Ladies, stars in “On Agate Hill.” The production is directed by Suzanne Tinsley, with musical accompaniment by Jeff Sebens playing banjo, hammered dulcimer, and lap dulcimer.

The novel On Agate Hill is the 2007 “Together We Read” selection for Western North Carolina. The novel’s heroine, Molly Petree, orphaned by the Civil War, is “a spitfire and a burden” who risks everything to hold on to her own nature and to true love.

For more information about the performance, or to purchase tickets, please call City Lights Bookstore at (828) 586-9499.

In addition, a schedule of readings and panel discussions on the day of the Fair is in process. This page will be updated when the details have been worked out.
